International students who are accepted by higher educational institutes in Hungary are required to obtain a student visa (TM-6, valid for 30 days) from the Hungarian Embassy or Consulate before entering the country.
To receive a student visa, it is necessary to submit the “Letter of Acceptance” from the university. Once the student enters the country, it is essential for them to apply for a residence permit from the Hungarian Police Authorities for Foreign Citizens within 14 days of arrival.
Students from Non EU member countries who want to stay in Hungary for more than 90 consecutive days are required to apply for a long-term student visa to stay in the country.
- Students are advised to enquire well in advance about the entry requirements for the student visa in your home country
- Students should have received an offer from a Hungarian university in order to receive a student visa for Hungary.
Students can approach the Hungarian Consulate or Embassy in your country to apply for a visa and this has to be done prior to their departure.
Processing a visa usually takes a one month, but could be longer so students have to apply in advance to avoid any unnecessary complications.

International Students who are not EU citizens and plan to stay and study in Hungary for a period longer than 90 days must apply for a long term study Visa.
Processing time for visas will take approximately one month time. So International students must apply well in advance and schedule appointments accordingly.
The students have to make sure they apply for residence permit within 15 days of arrival in Hungary. This applies to those who wish to stay for more the 90 days.
